NBT BANK FEATURES ARTIST CHARLENE WALLING

Charlene WallingNORWICH, N.Y. (SEPTEMBER 23, 2009) – NBT Bank’s Wall of Art is featuring the artwork of Charlene Walling at the bank’s Norwich Office on South Broad Street. Her work will be on display until late October.

Walling specializes in plein air (“open air”) paintings based on Chenango County’s countryside. The technique involves painting outdoors. “I grew up in the country, and I identify best with nature,” she said. “I see design, color, light and shadows in everything around me.”

For its Wall of Art, NBT Bank is partnering with the Chenango County Council of the Arts to highlight the creativity of area residents. Council Executive Director Victoria Kappel said: “Charlene’s plein air method involves capturing a scene as she directly observes it. Whether it’s a field of bright-red flowers or a quiet pond, her work allows you to see nature with an artist’s eye.”

Walling, a resident of Norwich, was an art teacher for 28 years in the Mount Upton, South New Berlin and Unadilla Valley school districts. She now teaches open-studio classes for adult students at Harrington’s Greenhouses in Norwich. She also helped form Colorscape Plein Air Painters of Central New York, which is a chapter of the New York State Plein Air Painters.

NBT Bank provides personal banking, asset management and business services. The independent community bank, based in Norwich, N.Y., has 84 offices in upstate New York and one office in northwestern Vermont. NBT Bank’s parent company, NBT Bancorp Inc., had assets of $5.4 billion as of June 30, 2009.
